National Honor Society 05/01/12
With proud parents and teachers present, 61 sophomores and juniors were inducted into the AMHS Chapter of the National Honor Society on May 1 at a special ceremony to honor its newest members. These students not only have excellent grades (a 3.6 grade point average or above) but they exhibit four qualities held in esteem by the National Honor Society: scholarship, service, leadership and character.
Students recited the NHS pledge together:
I pledge to maintain high scholastic standing, to hold as fundamental and worthy an untarnished character, to endeavor intelligently and courageously to be a leader, and to give of myself freely in service to others. In so doing, I shall prove myself worthy of a place in the National Honor Society.
Congratulations to the following students:

As of this morning there are 22 schools participating the art show. I have received many grateful and enthusiastic comments from the teachers. More than half of the teachers have told me how this is now part of their art curriculum and that they have worked toward the show all year. To date the schools that have turned in work are Holy Family Kirkland, Olympic View Middle School, St. Louise School, Sacred Heart Seattle, St. Pius X, St. Luke, St. Michael, St. Anthony, St. Mary Magdalen, St. Monica, St. Brendan, Lakewood Middle School, St. Thomas More, St. Catherine, St. Mark, Our Lady of the Lake, Assumption St. Bridget, Villa Academy, Christ the King, St. Alfonsus, Holy Family Seattle, and Holy Rosary Edmonds. (I am expecting a couple of more schools to turn in art in the next couple of days.) There are 497 K-8 students participating and 140 AMHS students have submitted work. There are about 637 students participating in the show this year.
Jurors this year include Michael Reagan, AMHS Chaplain Father Armando Guzmán, and AMHS Alum Parent Jim Kramer, . Michael Reagan is a notable Northwest artist who has drawn portraits for Oprah Winfrey, Senator John Glenn and Gregory Peck. He was appointed Director of Trademark and Licensing for the University of Washington and was chosen to design the new Husky logo. Brom Wikstrom will also be jurying this year. Mr. Wikstrom is a Seattle native who has his drawings and painting in the collections of Ted Kennedy Jr., the Japanese Embassy, the Microsoft and Coca Cola corporations and many more. Mr. Wikstrom is a member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Painters, he is the president of Very Special Arts, and he works at the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture. Mr. Wikstrom's work is sold and collected internationally.
Art submissions fall into the categories of drawing, painting, sculpture, sacred art, and for AMHS students – photography. The Seattle Art Museum will be partnering with Archbishop Murphy to provide a family pass to each K-8 student who participates in the show. Additionally the top sixty pieces from the show will be on display at the Seattle Art Museum during the month of August. The objective of the show is to celebrate the artistic accomplishments of each participant. The AMHS Fine Arts Council sponsors this show that has become an important tradition for many of our K-8 schools.
