Daffodil planting in memory of Dawn Lawrence took place on the berm on the west end of the football field in November. The flowers are just starting to open up this windy March day. Fran Ennis, John Matusak, Jane Brown, and Beth Mock took a moment to enjoy the flowers they planted, along with Jon Echols, Jerry Zander, Alex Crane and many students. It had been a very wet and stormy day. The clouds broke, and an eagle soared overhead as if Dawn were looking down upon us. We love and miss you, dear friend.  03/30/12

Dear Families and Friends of Archbishop Murphy High School,

It is with profound sadness that I announce to you that Dawn Lawrence, beloved friend, colleague and teacher, has passed away after a long bout with cancer.  God called her home at 5:00 PM Tuesday, November 15 surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Dawn was a biology teacher at Archbishop Murphy High School for five years.  During that time she gave herself completely to her students and to her classroom work.  There was no greater joy for Dawn than to see her students succeed.  The hallmarks of her professional life were her enthusiasm for her teaching and her high standards for her students.  She will be sorely missed by all in the Archbishop Murphy community.

In terms of the next two days, we have planned the following: first, we have met this morning (11/16) with the faculty and staff to inform them and to lay out the plans for the day.  Freshman and sophomore students will meet at the beginning of the first period of the day in the black box theater with Mr. Matusak and Mr. Schambari.  Juniors and seniors will meet in the gym with Mrs. Ennis and myself.  We will inform the students of Mrs. Lawrence’s passing and assure them that counseling will be available to them all day if they want to talk to someone or help them through their initial grieving.  We will have our own counseling staff available as well as priests from local parishes.  There will also be an optional prayer service for students and faculty/staff immediately after school today (11/16).  Tomorrow (11/17) there will be an all-school prayer service at 9:50 AM in the gym.  Please know that you are welcome to join us for that prayer service tomorrow.

Our highest priority is to help our students, faculty and staff through this difficult time.  We will be particularly watchful over the next few days to attend to any student who may be having a difficult time dealing with the loss of Dawn and to get them the help they need.  I would ask you also to be especially aware at home of how your son or daughter is coping with this.  Do not hesitate to inform us of any reaction you feel needs to be attended to.

Dawn was a wonderful teacher and friend, and she will be missed.  Personally, I will miss her constant smile and her excitement about the successes of her students.  As we grieve her loss, we also find peace in knowing that she is with our God and Savior.

Sincerely,

Robert P. Graby, Ed.D.
