February 23, 2019: In a competition featuring the most AMHS mock trial students in team history (43), the Archbishop Murphy High School mock trial team advanced its “Black” team to the State Meet after capturing 1st place in the Snohomish County Mock Trial District Competition. This marks the 8th District Championship since the program started in 2005, and the 14th consecutive season AMHS has advanced a mock trial team to state. This year’s fictional case, entitled “Flyspecks”, involves an environmental nuisance action taken by a property owner and a Homeowners Association against defendant Loren Greendrover and his/her cattle farm. Mr./Miss Greendrover’s farm sits right next to a number of residential properties, including next-door neighbor Jesse Applegate, who allegedly suffers from excessive flies, odor, and truck noise from the Greendrover farm. Various scientific issues like fly species, road maintenance, and cattle-to-acre ratios, as well as legal issues like contract and land use law, help make this case particularly educational and interesting.
