Transportation Information

Parents are requested to talk to their students concerning transportation and correct behavior when riding with another student driver. A school van is normally available for transportation when practice fields/courts are not within walking distances and families are unable to provide transportation. For all away games, students will ride in official vehicles with the team or with a designated parent or adult chaperones, unless noted below.

 

Concussion Information

A concussion is a brain injury and all brain injuries are serious. They are caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or by a blow to another part of the body with the force transmitted to the head. They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious. You can’t see a concussion and most sports concussions occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of concussion may show up right after the injury or can take hours or days to fully appear. If your child reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms or signs of concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away. 

Symptoms may include one or more of the following:

  • Headaches

  • “Pressure in head”

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Neck pain

  • Balance problems or dizziness

  • Blurred, double, or fuzzy vision

  • Sensitivity to light or noise

  • Feeling sluggish or slowed down

  • Feeling foggy or groggy

  • Drowsiness

  • Change in sleep patterns

  • Amnesia

  • “Don’t feel right”

  • Fatigue or low energy

  • Sadness

  • Nervousness or anxiety

  • Irritability

  • More emotional

  • Confusion

  • Concentration or memory problems

    (forgetting game plays)

  • Repeating the same question/comment

 
 

Signs observed by teamates, parents, and coaches include:

  • Appears dazed

  • Vacant facial expression

  • Confused about assignment

  • Forgets plays

  • Is unsure of game, score, or opponent

  • Moves clumsily or displays incoordination

  • Answers questions slowly

  • Slurred speech

  • Shows behavior or personality changes

  • Can’t recall events prior to hit

  • Can’t recall events after hit

  • Seizures or convulsions

  • Any change in typical behavior or personality

  • Loses consciousness

What can happen if my child keeps on playing with a concussion or returns too soon?

Athletes with the signs and symptoms of concussion should be removed from play immediately. Continuing to play with the signs and symptoms of a concussion leaves the young athlete especially vulnerable to greater injury. There is an increased risk of significant damage from a concussion for a period of time after that concussion occurs, particularly if the athlete suffers another concussion before completely recovering from the first one. This can lead to prolonged recovery, or even to severe brain swelling (second impact syndrome) with devastating and even fatal consequences. It is well known that adolescent or teenage athlete will often under report symptoms of injuries, and concussions are no different. As a result, education of administrators, coaches, parents and students is the key for student-athlete’s safety.

If you think your child has suffered a concussion

Any athlete even suspected of suffering a concussion should be removed from the game or practice immediately. No athlete may return to activity after an apparent head injury or concussion, regardless of how mild it seems or how quickly symptoms clear, without medical clearance. Close observation of the athlete should continue for several hours. The new “Zackery Lystedt Law” in Washington now requires the consistent and uniform implementation of long and well-established return to play concussion guidelines that have been recommended for several years:

“a youth athlete who is suspected of sustaining a concussion or head injury in a practice or game shall be removed from competition at that time” and “...may not return to play until the athlete is evaluated by a licensed heath care provider trained in the evaluation and management of concussion and received written clearance to return to play from that health care provider”.

You should also inform your child’s coach if you think that your child may have a concussion. Remember it is better to miss one game than to miss the whole season. And when in doubt, the athlete sits out.

SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST 

What is sudden cardiac arrest?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the sudden onset of an abnormal and lethal heart rhythm, causing the heart to stop beating and the individual to collapse. SCA is the leading cause of death in the U.S. afflicting over 300,000 individuals per year. SCA is also the leading cause of sudden death in young athletes during sports

What causes sudden cardiac arrest?

SCA in young athletes is usually caused by a structural or electrical disorder of the heart. Many of these conditions are inherited (genetic) and can develop as an adolescent or young adult. SCA is more likely during exercise or physical activity, placing student-athletes with undiagnosed heart conditions at greater risk. SCA also can occur from a direct blow to the chest by a firm projectile (baseball, softball, lacrosse ball, or hockey puck) or by chest contact from another player (called “commotio cordis”).

While a heart condition may have no warning signs, some young athletes may have symptoms but neglect to tell an adult. If any of the following symptoms are present, a cardiac evaluation by a physician is recommended:

  • Passing out during exercise  
  • Chest pain with exercise  
  • Excessive shortness of breath with exercise  
  • Palpitations (heart racing for no reason)  
  • Unexplained seizures  
  • A family member with early onset heart disease or sudden death from a heart condition before the age of 40

How to prevent and treat sudden cardiac arrest?

Some heart conditions at risk for SCA can be detected by a thorough heart screening evaluation. However, all schools and teams should be prepared to respond to a cardiac emergency. Young athletes who suffer SCA are collapsed and unresponsive and may appear to have brief seizure-like activity or abnormal breathing (gasping). SCA can be effectively treated by immediate recognition, prompt CPR, and quick access to a defibrillator (AED). AEDs are safe, portable devices that read and analyze the heart rhythm and provide an electric shock (if necessary) to restore a normal heart rhythm. Remember, to save a life: recognize SCA, call 9-1-1, begin CPR, and use an AED as soon as possible

Archbishop Murphy High School Student Athletic and Leadership Code

The opportunity to participate in the activities, athletics, or as an elected or appointed school leader (e.g. - ASB officers, Class officers, Cheerleaders) at Archbishop Murphy High School is a privilege available to all students. Because of the public nature of activities and athletics programs sponsored by Archbishop Murphy High School, students choosing to participate are expected to conduct themselves at all times during their season of participation and between consecutive seasons in a manner that will reflect the high standards and mission of this school and the greater AMHS community. These high personal standards for conduct promote maximum achievement, safe performances, commitment to excellence in health and conditioning, and fulfill responsibilities as student leaders by setting a positive example for other students. 

 

The expectations for being a participant in Archbishop Murphy High School’s athletic or activities program, including specific eligibility requirements, training rules, activities expectations and team rules shall be communicated to team members/group members at the beginning of the season of participation. All program expectations and team rules shall be in writing. Students must meet the standards for interscholastic eligibility as outlined in Article 18 of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association handbook, the Cascade Conference handbook and the Archbishop Murphy High School handbook. Copies of these rules and regulations may be obtained from the school Athletic Director or a Vice Principal upon request.

 

Any athlete/leader in an Archbishop Murphy High School activity/athletic and/or leadership activity who performs any act that substantially interferes with or is detrimental to the orderly operation of the activity/athletic/leadership programs shall be subject to discipline. As participants in activity or athletic programs, students are faced with choices. If a student’s choices interfere, impede, hinder their personal or group/team performance or render the individual as unfit to serve as a representative of Archbishop Murphy High School, he/she forfeits the privilege to participate. 

 

GENERAL RULES

 Misconduct by participants in the activity/athletic program at any time, on or off campus, school related and/or non-school activities during the season of participation and between consecutive seasons of participation constitutes cause for discipline including probation, denial of participation in, and removal from the program as well as other sanctions deemed appropriate by the administration. Seasons begin with the first turnout and conclude with the final event, practice, performance, or season ending recognition/awards program in the individual activity/sport.

 Consequences for violations of the Student Activity and Leadership Code will include any or all:

  • Probation is a period of time in which an athlete may be given time to correct deficiencies that could result in denial of participation for a given period of time or removal from activities/group, athletic team or participation.
  • Denial of participation means that the athlete is allowed to practice but not compete/perform in games or any leadership activities.
  • Loss of eligibility, which may carry over to subsequent activity/athletic seasons, means the student will not participate in uniform or interscholastic competition or leadership activities/groups. During the period when a student is assigned a suspension from school, the student is not eligible to practice, attend meetings, or participate in competition.

 Use and/or Possession of Legend drugs, Alcohol, and Controlled Substances

Per WIAA regulation 18.24.2:, RCW   69.41.020-­‐050) and controlled substances (RCW   69.50)

The following rules apply to any athlete/leader that is found to have possessed, consumed, or sold drugs, alcohol, and/or controlled substances and to any participant who is knowingly in the presence of illicit consumption, possession, or sale of said substances.

If an athlete/leader is present while a violation of the aforementioned rules is occurring it is expected that the athlete/leader immediately vacates the premises or disposes of the illicit substance.  Failure to do so will cause an initiation of the violation protocol

 

 1st Violation -­-

A participant that is found to  be in  violation  of  of RCW   69.41.020  through 69.41.050 or of RCW  69.50 shall be immediately suspended from all team/club activities for 20 days.  This suspension shall start at the moment the student is informed of his/her violation.

 

This suspension may be reduced to 10 days upon recommendation of the administration and completion of a certified drug and alcohol assessment program.

 

If the current athletic or club season ends before the suspension is completed, the remainder of the suspension will carry over to the participant’s next full season.  This season must be completed in its entirety in order for the served suspension to be valid.

 

If a student is not involved in athletics or clubs at the time of the violation, the suspension will be applied to the participant’s next season.

 

Any participant that is found to  be in  violation  of  of RCW   69.41.020 through 69.41.050 or of RCW  69.50 while on campus or at a school function will forgo the protocol for the 1st violation and immediately be subject to the protocol for the 2nd violation.

 

2nd Violation  -­-

A   participant  who  again  violates  any   provision of RCW   69.41.020   through   69.41.050   or   of   RCW  69.50  shall be ineligible  for  interscholastic competition and club participation for  a period  of  one  (1) calendar  year  from  the   date  of  the second violation.

 

3rd Violation  -­-

A  participant  who  violates  for  a  third  time RCW 69.41.020  -­‐ 69.41.050  or  of  RCW  69.50  shall   be permanently ineligible  for interscholastic  competition and or club participation.

 

Request for Reinstatement

If a student-athlete has committed 3 violations and has had their athletic/club eligibility stripped for the remainder of their high school eligibility, the individual may after one year from the time of third incident apply for reinstatement.

 

REINSTATEMENT PROCESS: Application for reinstatement following any form of athletic/club discipline will be accepted by the Dean of Students upon completion of the following:

1. Letter of intent and purpose of reinstatement

2. Drug, alcohol and/or tobacco assessment by an individual agency that is acceptable to the school district. Results will be shared with family and school administration.

3. Proof that a drug, alcohol and/or tobacco counseling or preventative education program has been completed.

4. Meeting with the reinstatement committee.  The committee will consist of the Athletic Director, Dean of Students, Vice-Principal, and one faculty member chosen by the individual applying for reinstatement. 

 5. The principal may waive any or all of the requirements above if deemed appropriate. Final decision for reinstatement resides with the school principal.

 

 

Use and/or Possession of Tobacco Products

Disciplinary consequences will occur in the following progressive steps. The administration reserves the right to move to a more severe step at any time given the nature and severity of the occurrence:

  • First Violation
    • o   The student shall be denied participation from team activities for five (5) school days.
    • Second Violation
      • o   The student shall be denied participation from team activities for twenty (20) school days.
      • Third Violation
        • o   The student shall be denied participation from the athletic program for the remainder of the current school year. 

 

Conduct Rules
Athletes and/or student leaders will receive disciplinary consequences for failure to demonstrate courtesy, fairness and respect for other participants, spectators, advisors, coaches, staff members, and supervisors; unsportsmanlike conduct; profanity; obscene gestures; lack of attendance; and/or damage; vandalism to school property, uniform and equipment; another school’s district property. Athletes and/or student/leaders are held to all rules of conduct as described in the Archbishop Murphy High Handbook and will receive disciplinary consequences for failure to follow reasonable requests, academic dishonesty violations, bullying, misuse of technology and/or behaviors deemed unacceptable by Archbishop Murphy High School

 

Failure to follow building and/or team rules
Participation in sports/activities is a privilege.  Each sport/leadership/activity program will have individual athletic team/leadership/group rules established by the head coach/advisor. The head coach/advisor shall inform the school Athletic Director/Activity Director.  In some cases, these rules may exceed the minimum standards established by the athletic department.  Any violation of team/activity rules can result in suspension or removal from the team/activity.  The coach/moderator along with the administration will determine punishment based upon the severity of the action.

RIGHT OF REVIEW

Consequences assigned from the Student Activity and Leadership Code are a form of discipline. Athletic/Leadership disciplinary actions are subject to review through an informal grievance process. Should the athlete or parent/guardian feel aggrieved by the imposition of discipline through the Athletic/Leadership Code the following procedures shall be followed:

  • A request to review a disciplinary action (appeal) must be submitted in writing to a Vice Principal within two (2) school business days after the initial decision regarding the disciplinary consequences. After that time, the right to any review is deemed to have been waived.
  • Submitted appeals will be reviewed as noted in the Administration and Review of Disciplinary Sanctions section of the School Handbook.
  • The outcome of any grievance review process may result in a decision to sustain the corrective action assigned by the school or to modify or rescind the corrective action in cases of extenuating or exceptional circumstances. The Principal’s decision will be final. 

Any student who is involved in an Archbishop Murphy High School Activity or Athletic, or Leadership Program must adhere to rules outlined in this Student Code. 

 

 

WIAA Recruiting Policy

24.0.0  ILLEGAL RECRUITING –WIAA Handbook

24.0.0  ILLEGAL RECRUITING ‐ Students who demonstrate special skills and talent in any of the activities under the jurisdiction of  the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association  should not be  subjected  to pressures  to enroll or continue  to be enrolled in a member school outside of their normal enrollment area. The rules do not prohibit legitimate school public relations, promotion or marketing.  Rather, these rules prohibit capitalization upon a school’s athletic program and/or a student’s athletic   interest, potential or proficiency as a factor in determining school attendance.  Efforts to induce students to enroll or continue to be enrolled in a member school because of the students’            special talent or skill are considered recruiting. Recruiting of students or attempted recruiting of students for athletic purposes is prohibited, regardless of their residence. 

24.1.0    No student athlete may receive, or be offered, any remunerations of any kind, or to receive or be offered special inducement of any kind which is not made available to all applicants who enroll or continue to be enrolled in the school or apply to the school. 

    A.  Special inducement shall include, but not be limited to, the offer or acceptance of: 

    1.  Money or other valuable consideration such as free or reduced tuition during the regular year or summer school by anyone connected with the school. 

    2.  Room, board or clothing or financial allotment for clothing. 

    3.  Pay for work that is not performed or that is in excess of the amount regularly paid for such service. 

    4.  Free transportation by any school connected person. 

    5.  Residence with any school connected person. 

    6.  Any privilege not afforded to non‐athletes. 

    7.  Free or reduced rent for parents. 

    8.  Payment of moving expenses of parents or assistance with the moving of parents. 

    9.   Employment of family unit in order to entice the family to move to a certain community if someone connected with the school makes the offer. 

    10.  Help in securing or promising a college athletic scholarship. 

B. Inducing or attempting to induce or encourage any prospective student to attend or continue to attend any member school for the purpose of participating in athletics, even when special remuneration or inducement is not given, is a violation. 

No member school and no one acting on behalf of any member school shall give any speech or give any slide, film or tape presentation or distribute any written material which states or implies that a member school’s athletic program is better than the athletic program of any other member school or that it would be more advantageous for any prospective student‐athlete to participate in athletics at that member school as opposed to any other school. 

C.Member schools shall be responsible for any violation committed by any person associated with the school, including principals, assistant principals, coaches, teachers, any other staff members or students, or any organization having any connection to the school.  The member schools shall be responsible for any violation committed by any person acting at the direction of the school. 

This rule is not intended to prevent a member school from conducting academic recruitment programs or recruitment programs designed to attract students based upon the school’s overall educational and extracurricular programs of the school and not be used as a subterfuge for recruiting students for athletic purposes. 

D.A student who has enrolled in a different school and has been determined to be recruited will be deemed ineligible at all levels of play and for all sports for one full calendar year.  The one (1) year penalty will begin on the day the determination is made that the student has been recruited

Academic Eligibility Policy

Eligibility grade checks will be conducted 4 times during each semester for all students.  These grade checks will take place at 6 weeks, 9 weeks, 12 weeks, and 15 weeks from the start of the school year.  At the point of any grade check, all students whose grades include an “F” in any course and/or whose GPA is below a 2.0 will be ineligible for all athletic/co-curricular competitions or performances.  The student may practice, but will not be allowed to compete or perform, and will be required to commit to an action plan as set forth by her/his teacher, counselor, and/or the academic vice principal.This plan will be individually tailored plan to help her/him succeed and to remedy any academic deficiencies the student may have. This process may also require conferences with parents, tutoring, and/or counseling as determined by AMHS in its sole discretion.  If the student does not follow this plan, the vice principal and athletic director retain the authority to suspend the student from all co-curricular activities including but not limited to practices, rehearsals, and club meetings.  Once a student’s GPA is above a 2.0 and no longer includes an “F” in any course, he/or she will be immediately cleared for full participation.

At the end of each semester, any student that has a GPA below a 2.0 or receives an “F” in one course will be academically ineligible for athletic/co-curricular competition or performance for the first 3 weeks of the subsequent semester.  At that point, if the student has a 2.0 and no “F’s” in any course, he or she will be eligible and once again subject to the standard grade check policy.

Per WIAA regulations, any student that has 2 “F’s” at the end of a semester will be ineligible for the first 5 weeks of the next semester.  At that point he/she will be subject to the standard grade check policy.

Attendance Policy

Students must be in class for 2 consecutive periods or half of the school day in order to participate in that days competition/performance.

If a team is scheduled to leave the school day early, please keep the dismissal times in mind when scheduling appointments or arriving after the first bell. 

Parent Consent

Warning: Participation in interscholastic athletics can be a dangerous activity involving multiple risks of injury. Such injuries can range from abrasions, bruises, and sprains to catastrophic injuries resulting in crippled condition, paralysis, brain damage and even fatality. Severe injuries can impair a student’s ability to earn a living, to engage in social and recreational activities, and to generally enjoy life. Careful consideration should be given to the risks and dangers associated with interscholastic athletics before making the decision to

participate.

 

AMHS does not purchase insurance for coverage of student injury or accident. Private insurance protection is required. If desired, a

student insurance plan is available through AMHS. An application form mat be obtained at the business office.   Parents/guardians are responsible for securing medical insurance coverage for their student and for any costs of medical treatment that may be incurred as a result of the student’s athletic participation.

 

Participation in interscholastic athletics is a privilege, which carried a corresponding responsibility for exemplary conduct. Student

athletes are expected to abide by all AMHS rules, and athletic policies as published by AMHS.

 

 

 

We acknowledge that we have read and understand the above information and grant permission for student participation in interscholastic athletics. We also understand that presenting false information may result in the loss of athletic eligibility and forfeiture of team games.
