Get Involved at the AMHS Experiential Learning Center

  • AMHS

AMHS has an experiential learning center to give students unique hands-on and career-related opportunities.

AMHS’s Experiential Learning Center gives students unique learning opportunities they may not have had at other schools. We’re excited to provide more opportunities through this new space!

WHAT IS THE AMHS EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CENTER?

Archbishop Murphy High School’s Experiential Learning Center (ELC) is a space for our students to enjoy hands-on and project-based learning. It is a multimedia learning center with both library collections, a technology help desk, and space for projects and events.

As we move forward, we plan to host more special activities and guest speakers for the Experiential Learning Center. Our goal is to give students hands-on opportunities to create and expose them to future academic and career paths.

GUEST SPEAKERS

The AMHS ELC hosts a variety of speakers, most of whom represent topics in business that students are interested in learning more about. We have hosted both in-person and virtual panels as well as individual speakers.

Guest speakers have presented on everything from human resources to owning a business.

CAREER EVENTS

In March, we hosted the annual Spring Career Fair. It spanned most of our campus, not just the ELC. We had booths with guest presenters on a range of topics in our gym and presentations on specific industries in our classrooms. These presentations included everything from nursing and forensic science to engineering and teaching.

Students have also done mock job interviews through the ELC. We’ve brought in outside professionals to conduct these interviews. We’ve also hosted resume building workshops and given students access to a job board.

OTHER EVENTS AT THE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CENTER

AMHS has also hosted mock DECA competitions in the Experiential Learning Center. We love giving students who are interested a chance to practice their presentation and business skills!

Our DECA team used these opportunities to prepare for success at the WA DECA State Career Development Conference this year. Five of our students earned medals and were recognized on stage in Principles of Marketing, Career Development Project, and Sales Project events.

We plan to host more special activities and projects in the ELC going forward.

TECHNOLOGY CENTER

We will soon be updating the ELC space to include a technology center and helpdesk area. We will provide tech support and opportunities for students to check out Chromebooks as needed.

Our dedicated IT staff will relocate their offices to this area. Students can work in the Technology Center as part of the help desk staff.

CLASSES THAT USE THE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CENTER

Some of our CTE (Career and Technical Education) classes meet regularly in the ELC. These include our Graphic Design, Yearbook, Future Ready, Intro to Business, and Management & Marketing classes.

ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The AMHS ELC recently launched an Artist in Residence program. Our first Artist in Residence, master woodcarver and Tulalip Tribal member James Madison, will lead our community through the creation of a Totem Pole. This creative outlet will help our community learn about Coastal Salish arts and Tulip culture while healing from our pandemic experiences.

You can learn more about this project and the Artist in Residence program from the recent Letter From the Principal.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

The ELC is open Monday – Thursday, 2:35 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. Students can find it on the second floor of Grace Hall, Room 507.

We’d also love to see the larger AMHS community get involved with the ELC! We encourage family members, alumni, and business partners to join our networking database for more opportunities.

The 2021 Fund a Need campaign is a large part of what made the Experiential Learning Center possible. To help us fund more learning opportunities through the ELC and other programs, we encourage you to donate to AMHS or attend one of our funding events.
