WHAT IS A COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT?

A college preparatory high school offers more challenging academics and other programs that help students get ready for success in higher education.
If you’re a junior high or high school student planning to go to college, you may be curious about college preparatory high schools. While you don’t need to attend one to apply for college, these schools can help you prepare for success in college and beyond. Read on to learn more about these schools.
WHAT IS A COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL?
A college preparatory high school, also known as a college prep high school, is a school that focuses on preparing students for success in college and beyond. This type of school usually offers a challenging academic curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, analytical skills, and a strong work ethic.
Most college preparatory high schools are private schools. You may need to pay tuition or get financial aid to enroll in this type of school.
RIGOROUS ACADEMICS

One of the hallmarks of a college preparatory high school is a rigorous academic program. These schools typically offer more rigorous general education courses and a wide range of advanced courses. Many offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses or other programs that allow students to earn college credit while still in high school.
The curriculum is designed to be more challenging and engaging than the typical high school curriculum. That means graduates are often better equipped for their coursework in college. They may be more likely to succeed in college, leading to better job prospects and higher earning potential after graduation.
To succeed at a college preparatory high school, students must develop strong study habits, time management skills, and writing and research abilities. The school will help students develop these skills. College prep schools also typically aim to instill a passion for intellectual pursuits. This love of learning will stay with students long after they leave the classroom.
EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
College prep schools usually offer after-school activities to help students explore their interests and become well-rounded individuals. These may include athletic teams, arts programs, student clubs, and volunteer opportunities.
These activities can help students build leadership skills, learn teamwork, and enjoy a sense of community. They also look great on college applications.
COLLEGE COUNSELING
Another vital part of college preparatory high schools is college counseling. These schools typically have a dedicated staff member or team of counselors who help students navigate the college application process. They help students apply for college, choose which college to attend, prepare for standardized tests, write essays, and apply for financial aid.
Some schools also host college or career fairs. They may invite college representatives or STEM professionals to visit the campus and meet with students.
CLOSER STUDENT-STAFF RELATIONSHIPS
Another benefit is the opportunity to build strong relationships with teachers and peers. Because college prep schools often have a smaller student-to-staff ratio than traditional high schools, students can work closely with their teachers. They may have closer relationships with their counselors and get more tailored guidance.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND A COLLEGE PREPARATORY HIGH SCHOOL?

A college preparatory high school is an excellent choice for students who are planning for college. These schools offer a strong foundation in core subjects, a range of extracurricular activities, and extra support in the college application process. Students will be surrounded by academically like-minded peers.
Attending a college preparatory high school isn’t for everyone, though. The workload is very demanding, and the pressure to succeed academically can be intense at some schools. Families should talk to current students and parents about their experiences before deciding to attend.
Overall, college preparatory high schools are great for students who want a challenging academic experience. These schools help students build the skills and confidence they need to succeed in college and beyond.
HOW AMHS PREPARES STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE

Archbishop Murphy High School is a college preparatory school in Snohomish, WA. As a private Catholic school, we strive for academic excellence, spiritual enrichment, and Christlike leadership. Our courses help prepare students for college and beyond.
CHALLENGING CLASSES
AMHS encourages students to take courses that challenge their capacity and potential. Students put in a lot of effort during class time and in their assignments. Our standard courses are challenging, and students can sign up for advanced courses with instructor permission.
We offer 16+ Advanced Placement (AP) courses that prepare students for the College Board exams in May. Students can earn credit for college courses depending on their exam scores and the college they later attend. They can also take honors courses in some subjects or earn credit at Seattle University through the Matteo Ricci program.
EXTRACURRICULAR OPPORTUNITIES
AMHS students enjoy a wide range of clubs, arts programs, sports teams, volunteer programs, and more. Some of our most popular student clubs are the Mock Trial team, robotics team, and DECA, which helps students explore business careers.
Students can explore the arts through elective classes or extracurricular programs. We have a school art show, fall drama program, spring musical, band and choir concerts, and more. Students can take classes in ceramics, graphic arts, painting/drawing, stage production, guitar, concert or chamber choir, concert band, jazz band, or orchestra.
AMHS competes in the WESCO 2A/3A league for most sports. Students can play football, tennis, soccer, swimming, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, golf, softball, and cheer. We have varsity, JV, and C teams in many sports.
PATHWAY PROGRAMS
Our school has two unique career pathway programs to help students explore their interests. Students can apply to join the 2-4 year Business Pathway Program or the 4-year Health Studies Program.
Both programs include special courses. Business Pathway students take Introduction to Business and Marketing & Management. Health Studies students take Health for HSP & Health Technology, Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, and Medical Interventions.
Students also get to learn through hands-on experience outside of class, like field trips and career-related volunteering. Business Pathway students often complete an internship before graduation. Health Studies Program students volunteer in a health care setting and do job shadowing with a professional.
ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER
AMHS’s Academic Resource Center (ARC) accommodates students with diagnosed learning differences. We offer modified classes in core academic subjects, support classes, and other help based on students’ needs.
SUPPORT LABS
We have several academic support labs both before and after school. Students can get help in our writing labs, math labs, or world language labs. We offer SAT prep classes, too. We also have an NHS tutoring program that pairs students with a junior or senior with a good track record in the subject.
