Different private high schools excel at different things. Here are some things to consider before choosing a school.

High school marks a pivotal transition in any student’s life. Whether you are starting high school as a freshman or are looking to transfer to another school, private schools have a lot to offer. However, there are many things to think about as you choose the place where you will spend the next few years of your life.

It is important to know what you want out of a private school education. Here is are a few ways to evaluate private high schools.

6 WAYS TO EVALUATE A PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOL

ACADEMICS

Private schools typically emphasize academics, but some schools show better results than others or focus their efforts in a specific subject area. While many offer a strong academic curriculum overall, others may focus on the arts or STEM. Some schools offer a religious studies component on top of the usual academic subjects.

If you are looking to get ahead and prepare for college, check if the school offers AP classes or dual enrollment through a local college. If you want religious immersion, ask how religion is incorporated into the school day. Once you know what you’re looking for, a school’s academic offerings can narrow down your choices.

PERSONAL NEEDS

While many private schools aptly serve the average high school student, some may not be able to provide for students who have particular needs. On the other hand, some schools are designed to serve students with specific needs.

Whether you need a school that can accommodate your learning disability or need a certain environment or individualized attention, some schools will do a better job than others. You need to know if the school you are considering will be able to accommodate you, and whether they have the resources to do it effectively.

LOCATION

If you’re attending school in person, you need to make sure you have a way to get to and from school. You should also consider what your commute will look like, especially if school buses are not an option —  would you need to spend hours in a car? Would you risk missing your transfer and being 30 minutes late to school if the first metro bus on your route runs late?

If it takes a long time to get to and from school, you may have a harder time participating in activities and making time for homework. A school near home is ideal for most students.

PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOL EXTRACURRICULARS

The number and type of extracurriculars offered at private schools can vary depending on the individual institution. Many private schools have unique programs you won’t find at other schools, but not every school will offer the specific program you’re looking for.

If you have interest in a certain activity, check to see if the school offers that program. Whether you’re interested in the arts, sports, campus ministry, or other school clubs, do your research to ensure the school offers the activity you want to pursue.

PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOL COMMUNITY

Many students come to love the community that forms at private schools. The relationships between students and staff, the school pride, and the school’s defining values all contribute to the school’s unique community.

Every private school has its own culture, and no two are the same. Ask yourself what you are looking for in terms of community. If you’re unsure, visiting a school can help you get a feel for what it would be like to go there.

TUITION

Private schools charge tuition, and some charge more than others. Catholic schools tend to cost less than secular private schools, but tuition can still be a challenge for some families.

Fortunately, there are many financial aid options available to help you afford a private school education. Many students who attend private schools receive scholarships, grants, or loans to ease the cost of tuition.

DOES WASHINGTON HAVE A SCHOOL VOUCHER PROGRAM?

No, Washington State does not have a school voucher program. However, the state does allow parents to open a 529 savings account to help save up for K-12 private school tuition.

Different private high schools excel in different areas, so it is important to find a school that fits your individual needs.
